The Boy Least Likely To are Jof (lyrics, vocals) and Peter (music, instruments), and together they understand that whilst all the best pop records are about love, loss and distance, it is the glistening melodies and tender hooks that are the honey trap. 'Hugging My Grudge' is the perfect introduction to their gently warped world, where a love of uplifting rural pop is balanced with insightful lyrics informed by an awareness of mortality and a loss of innocence. The pair met when they were still at school and grew up together in the small Buckinghamshire village of Wendover, a place they describe as being “like a cross between Trumpton and Sunnydale. On the surface it seems idyllic. All flowers and candyfloss, but underneath there is a darkness. The flowers have teeth and the candyfloss is laced”. Sharing a love of the lost pop music of the 80s, and of weird and wonderful instruments found at car boot sales and The Early Learning Centre, it was only a matter of time before they set about translating the pop songs in their heads into reality. After a series of limited 7" singles released on their own Too Young To Die label it was clear that The Boy Least Likely To had really hit on something. With each release more and more music fans and critics came out of the woodwork expressing their support, with the ever influential Rough Trade shops claiming of 'Fur Soft As Fur' that people would not “hear a better bedroom pop record all year”. In the summer of 2004 they set about recording their debut album, The Best Party Ever. Before the album is released later this summer, Peter and Jof will release album highlight 'Hugging My Grudge' as a single on 6 June, backed with brand new, non-album B-Side 'Every Grubby Little Memory'. In addition they have a series of live dates planned over the coming months. Live, The Boy Least Likely To transcend the bedroom origins of the material and whip up a storm with their seven piece band. Eschewing the drudgery of the bog standard indie circuit, the band have been putting on a series of parties at some unexpected venues. Come and check them out at Parker Place, Covent Garden next Monday and see if they don't put on The Best Party Ever. |
