Upon hearing the plaintive and beautiful opening strains of ‘Time to Pass’ from Granada’s outstanding second full-length album, a Canadian music fan might think so. But this artist collective from northern Europe has their own take on the grassroots melodic dream-pop that the Junkies helped popularize over a decade ago.

The ten tracks on Takes a Lot of Walking have an evolving dynamic, thanks in part to co-lead vocalists Anna Jarvinen and Magnus Vikstrom. Against a sparse, flowing backdrop of guitars, keyboards, harmonica and muted trumpet, the singers employ a conversational tone in their delivery, playing lyrics off each other on some tracks while taking solo turns in the spotlight on others. While the approach is very effective, Granada’s songs benefit most from Jarvinen’s vocals, which are simultaneously floating and fragile.

Not that the band is unable to hold its own, however. Jarvinen’s haunting solo lead on ‘To Die For’ is completely enchanting, and Grenada follows the track with ‘The Tortoise’, a soft, meandering instrumental that lulls the listener into a blissful stupor (a trance broken only by the re-introduction of the singers to finish the song with a three-minute coda).

Takes a Lot of Walking is Granada’s debut Canadian release on V2 Records. Margo and the Junkies had better watch their backs—there’s a new kid in town.
